We all make mistakes. The trick is learning from them.
One of the things we learned with our Paint Pour Project was that we have caused harm to some of our Indigenous folk in the community with the way in which we approached our Land Acknowledgement during our event.
Some felt that we treated it like it was an onerous task and done begrudgingly.
Others stated that they didn't like how we put the onus on non-Indigenous people to figure out what they wanted to do to create a more socially just community that acknowledges Indigenous sovereignty and rights.
We are very sorry for the harm that we have caused these individuals, and are in the process of doing a number of things to show our commitment to acting like an ally with Indigenous peoples.
We have offered some of our personal items up for auction for the benefit of several organizations and communities that do work with 1492 Landback as well as Two-Spirit organizations in Ontario. We have financially donated to these (and other) organizations. We have participated in workshops/discussions with Two-Spirit individuals and listened to what they want within those discussions.
We are currently working on putting together a Land Acknowledgement that we hope that our community will feel honours the land and the people who have been its stewards for centuries. At the same time, we will continue to invite participants in our workshops to read a portion of the 94 Calls to Action and choose one way that they can support Indigenous Sovereignty, Rights, and social justice. In so doing, we hope that we can foster a better relationship with Two-Spirit and Indigenous trans-folk.
Successes and Lessons Learned
This past weekend was a wonderful celebration of being ourselves, enjoying our identities, and immersing ourselves in the joy of our bodies, that feeling of Gender Euphoria.
Transgender artists from Elora to London, Beamsville to Cambridge, Hamilton to Guelph, fifty eight individuals in all, participated in our first Paint Pour Party.
While it was a great event, it was not without problems. We forgot to send the email out for the 18+ party until 20 minutes before the event. And even then, some people missed out because of faulty systems implemented to send emails in batches.
We reached out to those affected, sent emails to offer suggestions on how to do what we had done during our event, and chalked it down to first-time mistakes (which won't be repeated). We've committed to having a staff member to deal with last-minute messages asking for information, and also learning how to use a system like MailChimp properly.
For all of you who participated, thank you for joining us! For those who are seeing these paintings that were created during our event, and would like to learn more about having an event for your community, please use the contact form on our Contact us page.

Remember the first time that you figured out your gender? How great it felt to be in your body? Like all the parts of your body just thrummed in excitement? How you could feel every hair on your head, smell things that were a block away, taste the colour of the sunset, and hear the smile on your face? How you felt inside when someone finally got your pronouns right?
Tap into your memory of Gender Euphoria while making colourful paintings using an easy and fun painting technique:
